My reflection on meeting this outcome:
Emerging Threats
Throughout history, America has faced tragedies both foreign and domestic. After 9/11, America and its citizens realized that terrorists were more concern about affecting the American dollar than taking lives. We witnessed America come to together during and after 9/11 and soon after become complacent again. We live in a society who worries more about the freedoms they feel are being taken, than the ones they take for granted. Sometime I feel we are sheep just waiting to be slaughtered by wolfs. Why be victims when we can part of the solution. Terrorism by definitions and depending on the three letter agencies is any violent action to anyone to instill fear, or change the way they think or act. There were so many indicators after 9/11 that if someone would have put their pride aside we would be in a different palce right now.
The American dollar is important and the terrorist know that. Emerging criminal and terrorist threats are ever changing to America’s critical infrastructure and its businesses. The biggest issue we face currently is aging security professionals. The threat is changing and we currently have security professionals without the proper credentials to handle the emerging threats we are currently face. According to reports, there is more money in cyber-crimes than drug crimes in American and globally.(Chennai, 2010) This poses a huge issue for a couple of reasons. Physical and Network security share the same principles but are practiced by different individuals, there’s network security personal who usually live in a room with no windows who you call every now and then to reset your password, then their the physical security guys who checks your id at the front entrance. However, both provide an equal and valuable service to any facility.
I have learned that to be a well-balanced security asset you must poses the knowledge of both principles, this allows you to be an effective security professional. Most crimes committed today are cyber centric and if you don’t understand the way the network work or at what stage does your switch works you may not understand where the security issues is.
My Future Learning Goals related to this Outcome:
Emerging threats are evolving on a daily basis and it’s up to true security professionals to not only understand them but stay ahead of them. We live in a reactive society, especially law enforcement and we still tend to hire law enforcement for security positions, which only hurts us in the end. Security Professionals like myself must change the mindset of executives and management that proactive solutions are a security professionals job and not law enforcement.
I plan to utilize a combine method of network and physical security strategies to shorten the adversaries Observe Orient Decide Act (OODA) Loop allowing countermeasures to be implemented faster than the enemies are. I believe dual rolled security professionals are the future and will separate those who are only one-dimensional. Emerging threats will continue to be a risk to America and its critical infrastructure.
Continue to learn, by learning new ways to exploit weaknesses that others don’t, as a security professional we must dedicated our time and skills to know what they know and do what they do. We can’t stop the threat unless we understand the threat, we can understand the threat unless we think like them. I also will continue my certifications like my Certified Protection Professional which is a globally recognized certification, this will not only proof my skill set but indicate my dedication for knowledge.
